Christmas Baking Bees

In the spirit of a quilting bee or stir-up Sunday, The Laundry is holding special Christmas Baking Bees where you can make your own Christmas cake, be helped along the way and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea as well.
Homemade Christmas cake knocks spots off the shop bought varieties but making your own can be hard work. There's the creaming of the butter and sugar, beating in the eggs and stirring in large quantities of dried fruit, all requiring considerable muscle. So why not lighten the load, make the task fun and bake a cake in the company of friends.
All the ingredients and bake ware will be provided for you, to produce your own seasonal masterpiece; a 21cm (8in) round or 18cm (7in) square rich fruit cake, which will be baked in the oven here at Taurus for collection later, or for those living farther afield, your cake will be posted to you (an additional £5 is required for posting).
Tea will be provided with platters of sandwiches, slices of tart, cakes, cream and lemon meringue pie. At the end of the afternoon your goodie bag to take home will include a brandy miniature to douse your cake as it matures and mellows in time for the Christmas festivities.
The baking bees are suitable for the novice, who has never made a Christmas cake before, as well as experienced bakers. We will provide a tried and tested recipe to follow with some alternative variations. Anyone who has a family recipe they particularly want to follow or a special ingredient they always like to include will be able to do so. Fruit will be steeped in spirit ahead of time so all the preparation is done for you and a non-alcoholic option will also be available on request.
